Our work is grounded in a narrative analysis of power -- the recognition that humans understand the world and their role in it through stories. We tell stories through our rituals, customs, words, symbols, and ideas - these are "memes" (rhymes with dreams).
SmartMeme's experiments with narrative and memes have become the foundation of what we call story-based strategy -- a framework for linking movement building with an analysis of narrative power that places storytelling at the center of social change strategy.
From a philosophical perspective, we're demythologizing certain configurations of imagery and meaning in culture that invisibly shape our daily experience of reality and underlay apparatuses of oppression and environmental destruction. In other words, our approach aims to change the story to change the world.
"As a campaigner at the World Bank Bonds Boycott in 2004, I worked with SmartMeme to raise the profile of the struggle for global justice with creative communications strategies. We sold the World Bank on eBay during the Fall meetings, which ruffled a few feathers at the Bank and resulted in international news coverage for our campaign!"
